Lorien
Bales is a New Orleans based artist and Vodou priestess.
Her "Spirit bottles" are gifts to the Loa
and celebrations of the power and beauty of the Vodou mysteries.
They are one of a kind creations handcrafted to suit the particular
needs and tastes of the spirits represented.
Each sculpture is a meditation.
As she works, the spirits themselves pull their forms from the
clay and seem to demand the various accoutrements and costumes
that shall adorn them. Through an act of transformation, they
become not only ceremonial bottles and works of art but sacred
vessels that live and breathe.
The bottles vary in height
and range in price from $125 to $250. Each piece is a unique
expression of spirit and differs in the time and materials involved.
